I skied this on piste primarily on blue square terrain at Stowe on Perry Merrill. The snow conditions were groomed frozen granular with a small layer of fresh snow on top.

This ski was just right and is true to size.

This is a piste ski for people who want to make GS shaped turns.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

This ski is primarily for on piste. It was designed from race heritage, and it's sort of pointless to try to make it do anything off piste.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

This is for advanced intermediates and above. It is for on piste high level performance, and lower level skiers won't find that performance.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

As usual the Atomic G9 brings the GS vibe to the mountain after many years of reliable performance. Nothing stood out to me as being new in the G9 (I've tried these skis every year for the last ... who knows how long), but that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact I really love that Atomic keeps rolling out this classic with minor tweaks every year. If you're looking for a reliable GS shaped piste ski, this is a absolute stalwart that you can't really go wrong with.

Felt good for its size. The tip of the ski didn’t feel too far to reach, and there was more than enough tail to play with behind.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

The ski initiated easily, but the middle of the turn felt slightly soft compared to the strong tip and tail. It preferred to be carved rather than skidded, and the tail produced noticeable rebound if pressured too early. Overall, the ski felt most comfortable making clean, long-radius carved turns rather than short, quick turns.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

I would recommend this ski primarily for groomed terrain where the skier can take advantage of its carving performance. It performs best on firm snow and consistent surfaces because the ski has strong edge hold and a powerful tail that rewards clean turn shape. It was less comfortable in situations that required quick, short turns or more pivoting, so it is best suited for open runs where medium-radius carved turns are appropriate.

This ski is best suited for advanced to expert skiers who prefer a carving-oriented style. The ski rewards good pressure management and accurate edge engagement.

The ski felt very precise at the beginning of the turn and had a powerful finish, but the transition through the middle of the turn felt less supportive than expected for a ski in this category. It performed well when skied with strong technical movements, but it did not feel as versatile in shorter turns or more dynamic terrain.

Perry Merrill at Stowe. Conditions were fast and firm with loose granular, would have preferred if conditions were not so loose because it was hard to really grab hold of the hardpack.

This length felt true to size but I would likely size up. It left me wanting just a little bit more length. This length would be good for quick slalom turns but if you’re looking to up the speed and make more laid out GS turns a size up would be beneficial.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

My first impression of this ski was that it felt strong and enjoyable right away. I went in expecting it to be a standout favorite, and while it definitely performed well, I only had the chance to ski it deep loose granular snow. Those variable conditions may have limited its ability to really bite and hold an edge, which likely detracted from how confidently it could carve. After trying other skis in the same category, it didn’t quite rise to the top for me but it’s still a strong, capable ski, and I’d be interested to see how it performs in firmer conditions.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

I’d highly recommend the Atomic Redster G9 for firm, hardpack conditions. It’s an excellent choice for skiers with a racing background who want a ski that delivers exceptional edge hold and precision at speed.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

This ski is built for expert-level skiers who are confident, aggressive, and technically precise. It requires a strong, forward stance- staying over the front of your boots and consistently driving the ski through each turn. If you get lazy or fall into the backseat, it will quickly outpace and overpower you. In the right hands, though, it delivers incredible stability, responsiveness, and edge grip at high speeds.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

This ski performed very well overall, but I do think it could benefit from a bit more weight. That may have been influenced by the conditions I tested it in, but I didn’t quite get the level of stability I was looking for, especially at higher speeds. It still delivers strong performance and is a solid option, though it left just a bit to be desired in terms of dampness and confidence.

Kind of a wimpy GS ski but if you're a former racer who doesn't want the full charging GS ski experience it's really fun to rip GS turns, it is a bit limiting though.

If you could change anything about these skis, what would you change and why?

The ski is fun but very specific, I'd really only enjoy using it to make GS turns on groomers, I can't imagine it being much fun under any any other conditions.
